England goalkeeper, Robert Green, squandered an easy save to gift United States a goal and in turn a draw.

Green playing only in his 11th game for England will be haunted for the rest of his career by the mistake when he failed to stop a low effort on goal by Clint Dempsey. This goal cancelled out Steven Gerrard’s fourth minute opener for England.

Skipper Gerrard said:

“It’s one of those freak things that happens — plenty of people have been talking about the ball this week. It shocked us a bit, but we’ll get behind Robert.”

This was the second time Green had endured a World Cup nightmare after becoming the first England goalkeeper ever to be sent off when he was red carded in a qualifying match against Ukraine last October.

Finally Lionel Messi showcases a performance for his country, similar to Barcelona form.

Argentina scored early in the Group B game through defender Gabriel Heinze and could have easily added a few more. Messi could have scored four goals but Nigerian keeper- Enyeama made some good saves.

Nigeria’s coach Lars Lagerback said: “I’m very disappointed about the result. Unfortunately there was a mistake from our side … we stood sleeping on one of the corners (and) that’s what happens at this level.”

South Korea were the first team in this year’s World Cup to score a win, with a 2-0 victory over a Greece.

Lee Jung-soo and captain Park-Ji-sung netted early in each half to give South Korea only their second World Cup win on foreign soil and left Greece struggling to advance from a group that includes Nigeria and one of the favourites Argentina.

The Koreans defended solidly against the aerial threat of the Greek players, who bombarded them with lofted passes that yielded few chances for a country that has lost every game they have played at the finals without scoring a goal.
