The winger’s hamstring injury proved less serious than first thought following a scan on Sunday.The Dutch FA (KNVB) said in a statement that Robben damaged his left hamstring during the closing minutes of the team’s last warm-up match against Hungary.

It left 14 slightly hurt and one policeman in a serious condition. The match was stopped for around five minutes early in the second half because of the injuries and safety of the fans in the overcrowded main stand where the fencing had been removed.

Nigeria won the match 3-1.

The sport’s governing body FIFA said in a statement that they did not have any concerns about a repeat incident occurring during the World Cup, which starts on Friday.

“FIFA would like to reiterate that this friendly match has no relation whatsoever with the operational organisation of the 2010 World Cup, for which we remain fully confident,”

the statement read.

“FIFA had nothing to do with the ticketing of this game.”

Coach Pim Verbeek told reporters:

“For everybody, this is a new experience to train and to play in altitude. So we have to find out how it works and what we can do the upcoming days, we still have work to do, but that’s why we have 15, 16 days to prepare ourselves.”

Australia play their first match against Germany on June 13 in Durban followed by a match against Ghana in Rustenburg. The Socceroos face Denmark today in a friendly warm up match.

Ballack suffered an ankle injury in Chelsea’s FA Cup match against Portsmouth, after a late tackle by Kevin-Prince Boateng. The 33-year-old was set to play in his third World Cup. The ankle too swollen to undergo a scan.

Ballack said:

“There’s naturally a lot of disappointment. It’s bitter to get a diagnosis like that two or three weeks before the World Cup. But that’s football. That happens. Life goes on.”

“He is naturally disappointed. I’ll fly down there now and we’ll let it all sink in.”

German Coach- Joachim Loew said he had been shocked by the news and added:

“Michael Ballack is a very important player for us, in the decisive matches he often played a very, very important role for us, a central role for us. I talked to Michael. He’s deeply disappointed. He put all his energy and power into playing in this World Cup. He’s near his 100th cap. That would have been a match in Frankfurt against Bosnia. That’s an immense disappointment for him to not be able to play in this World Cup.”

The DFB said Ballack has suffered a tear of one ankle ligament and a partial tear of another.

“According to the diagnosis today by national team physician, Dr. Hans-Wilhelm Mueller-Wohlfahrt, a complete recovery can be expected but a return to training will not be possible for at least eight weeks,”

said a statement.

Jerome has been selected in the German squad, while Kevin Prince has been named in the Ghana squad. The two grew up in Berlin, Germany, as the sons of an African immigrant.

Jerome’s mother is from Berlin and plays in defense, KP plays as an attacking mid-fielder. Both brothers grew up playing for the same club Hertha BSC. Jerome now plays for Hamburg SV and Kevin-Prince plays for Portsmouth. KP has played at the German youth levels, but has choosen to play for Ghana, his father’s home country.

Essien has been on the sidelines since the finals of the African Nations Cup held in January this year, now his recovery has been stalled with a few complications.

He told his club website:

“If I can make it in time for the World Cup then great but if not I still have my whole career ahead of me and that is more important than anything.”

“The last thing I want to do is rush back too soon and cause further problems down the line.”

He also added:

“I started doing a little bit of running recently which was a big step forward but that led to some pain. A scan showed I had some bruising so I had to stop running and I am now taking it easy until the bruising dies down. Unfortunately I don’t think I will be making a repeat of last season and may not be returning for the last few league games and the FA Cup final (against Portsmouth next month).”

“As far as Chelsea goes I think my season is finished.”
