Fabregas is keen to return to Barcelona.

World Cup winner Fabregas was a youth player at Barca before moving to the English Premier League club in September 2003 and the player has made it clear he wants to return to the Catalan capital.
Local media reported on Monday that Barca’s new president, Sandro Rosell, would travel to London this week to try to strike a deal but Guardiola was downbeat about the chances of success.
“I think that getting Cesc will cost a lot,” Guardiola told a news conference at the club’s training ground on the outskirts of the city.
“He is an important player for Arsenal,” he added. “We want him to come but if Arsenal don’t want to negotiate he won’t.”
Barca, who have already added Spain striker David Villa and versatile Brazilian midfielder Adriano Correia to their squad, have about 40 million euros ($52 million) more to spend on players, club officials have indicated.
As well as Fabregas, who is more of a playmaker, they would probably need to buy a holding central midfielder to replace the Manchester City-bound Yaya Toure.
Asked about the possibility of Zlatan Ibrahimovic leaving, Guardiola said he wanted the Swedish striker to stay but it was up to the player to decide.
Mexico captain Rafael Marquez was in the same situation, the coach added.
Ten of Barca’s first-team squad began pre-season training on Monday, with internationals including Andres Iniesta, Villa, Xavi, Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique still on holiday.

Liverpool have signed Joe Cole on a four-year deal – subject to a medical.

The 28-year-old England midfielder left Stamford Bridge in June after failing to agree a new contract with the Premier League champions.

He was linked to Arsenal and Tottenham but has opted for Liverpool, who failed to qualify for the Champions League.

Cole’s arrival follows winger Yossi Benayoun’s move from Anfield to Chelsea for an undisclosed fee in July.

Liverpool Manager Roy Hodgson and Joe Cole

The West Ham academy graduate becomes Liverpool’s second summer signing after Serbia forward Milan Jovanovic arrived on a three-year contract from Standard Liege.

Cole joined Chelsea from West Ham for £6.6m in 2003 and scored 40 goals in 282 appearances, winning three Premier League titles and two FA Cups.

In June he claimed unspecified “political rather than footballing reasons” had led to his departure, but he insisted manager Carlo Ancelotti was not the cause of those problems.

606: DEBATE
Cole is an inspired signing – furthermore it is a signing that Rafa could never have pulled off

Redfootball

“It is not financial and it is nothing to do with Carlo,” Cole said at the time. “I love Carlo. I think he is a top guy and a top manager.

“I loved my time at Chelsea, I love the fans but it is a story for another day and I will tell it but now is not the time.”

After recovering from 10 months out with a ruptured cruciate ligament, Cole grew frustrated at having to settle for a bit-part role in his final season at the club.

He was used mainly as a substitute and, when he did play, Ancelotti often deployed him in a wide position.

Cole, capped 56 times by his country, featured in two of England’s matches at the 2010 World Cup, though on both occasions he was introduced as a second-half substitute.

“Next season I want to have a fantastic season for England and whatever club I am at. The next contract will be a footballing decision,” he added earlier in June.

“I want to play in a more central position and I want a manager who has faith in me.”

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp, who nurtured Cole’s early career at West Ham, had talked of his desire to take the midfielder to White Hart Lane.

I’ve been an admirer of Joe’s for the last few years. He is a player that excites fans and he is a player that we desperately needed

Former Reds defender Alan Kennedy

Spurs finished fourth in the Premier League last season to earn a Champions League qualifying spot while Arsenal, also admirers of Cole, would have offered guaranteed Champions League football.

But he opted for Liverpool and new Reds manager Roy Hodgson will hope to bolster his squad further with a new left-back following the departures of Fabio Aurelio and Emiliano Insua.

Hodgson is also hoping to retain the services of captain Steven Gerrard and star striker Fernando Torres, both of whom have been linked with moves away from Anfield.

And former Liverpool defender Alan Kennedy believes Cole’s arrival could go some way to persuading the duo to stay.

“I’m delighted for the club,” Kennedy told BBC Sport. “Roy Hodgson has persuaded one of the best English players in the game to come in and that will only be good news for the club and for the players the club are looking to hold on to.

“I’m sure Roy and Liverpool can get the best out of Joe again, and hopefully it will result in the club pushing back up the league and targeting silverware again.

“I’ve been an admirer of Joe’s for the last few years. He is a player that excites fans and he is a player that we desperately needed.

This shows we can still attract top name players

Former Liverpool striker Ian Rush

“We know Joe had a lot of options, especially from London, but he’s looked at Liverpool and maybe thought to himself that he is the guy who can resurrect the club after what was a terrible season last year.

“Credit for that has to go to Roy Hodgson, I believe – he is a very persuasive man and a man well respected in football, so that’s fantastic news.”

Another former Red, Ian Rush, believes the signing underlines Liverpool’s ability to still compete for the best players in the world despite not being able to offer Champions League football.

“Liverpool might not have been successful as we would have liked to have been recently but this shows we can still attract top name players, whether that’s an England international or a foreign international,” said the Welshman.

“This is the signing supporters wanted and it’s a big boost for them.

“You look at last season when we went into it not hoping but thinking we were going to win the league. This season people are thinking, ‘Are we going to finish in the top four?’

“I think this sends a sign out to Liverpool supporters that the club do mean business.”

Thomas Mueller scored twice as Germany’s young side overwhelmed a sloppy English defence. The Germans counterattack was a skillful display. Germany brought about England’s biggest ever defeat in the World Cup finals.

England Vs Germany

Delighted Germany coach Joachim Loew said:

“It was a grandiose performance by our young team against a very good, experienced England team. It was first class and a lot of fun to watch.”

England bemoaned the linesman’s decision which disallowed Frank Lampard’s 20 meter shot, the ball hit the bar, dropped a meter behind the line, then bounced up and hit the bar again before it was gathered by keeper Manuel Neuer. It was clearly a goal and made an ironic comparison with Geoff Hurst’s disputed goal in the 1966 final between England and West Germany final which England won.

England coach Fabio Capello said of the referee’s decision:

“It is incredible. The game would probably have been different after this goal … I think (it was) the mistake of the linesman, but also I think the referee.”

England can have little complaints since their defense looked really sluggish.

Klose snatched the lead in the 20th minute and Lukas Podolski struck again in the 32nd minute.

Matthew Upson cut the deficit in the 37th minute, heading in a Steven Gerrard cross.

Germany now face Argentina in the quarter-finals.
3-1

Carlos Tevez sent Argentina through to the quarter-finals scoring two goals.

One of Tevez’s goals came from an offside position. After the replay flashed up on the big screen angry Mexico players surrounded the Italian referee Roberto Rosetti and linesman Stefano Ayroldi but the goal stood.

Argentina Vs Mexico

Until Tevez’s opener Mexico had looked the better side in this clash between the Latin Americans who had fought out a terrific contest at the same stage of the 2006 finals.

Any hopes Mexico had ended soon after the restart thanks to Tevez’s 52nd-minute blistering strike into the top corner from 25 yards out.

The French World Cup squad homed in a posh hotel

The French Football Federation will have to account for this choice, if the team exits early.

Chile arrived in South Africa on Sunday with Argentine-born coach Marcelo Bielsa

The coach is keen to get Humberto Suazo fit, the striker is likely to miss the opening two Group H games because of a hamstring injury.

Brazilian keeper- Julio Cesar will miss his first match in two years for the friendly against Tanzania.

Iker Casillas believes England’s keepers will be their weakness at the upcoming World Cup

The Spanish keeper has questioned the big-match temperament of Robert Green, David James and Joe Hart ahead of the tournament.

He said:

“Their goalkeeping situation is a real problem: none of the keepers have played even European Cup level, that’s the highest level you can play at club level. And if you have never played in the top club competition in the world, you are going to find it hard to perform at the top international level in the world when even more eyes are on you. If you look at myself, Gigi Buffon of Italy and Julio Cesar of Brazil, we are keepers who’ve all won European Championships, World Cups and European Cups.”

Australia’s preparations for the World Cup have been thrown into turmoil

Coach Pim Verbeek describing the surface at Ruimsig Stadium, the Socceroos’ new training ground, as “hopeless”.
He commented:

“It looked very good when we started; it was hopeless when we finished.”

Switzerland coach Ottmar Hitzfeld has played down concerns over the fitness of Valon Behrami

The midfielder came off with a suspected groin injury in his side’s 1-1 draw in their warm-up game against Italy.

“Behrami was playing very direct and looked threatening. I hope it’s not serious,” said Hitzfeld. “He wanted to continue playing actually. It was the doctor who took him out.”

Italy striker Fabio Quagliarella believes his side will arrive in South Africa “in the best possible condition” for their World Cup defence.

The Azzurri’s underwhelming preparations for the World Cup were concluded with a 1-1 draw against fellow finalists Switzerland on Saturday. That result followed a 2-1 defeat by Mexico in Italy’s only other warm-up match.

Rabah Saadane believes his Algeria team are a step closer to where they want to be for the World Cup

However, he still plans to work on certain aspects of their game after their final warm-up match against United Arab Emirates. The Desert Hawks, in the same group as England, won Saturday’s match 1-0 thanks to a second-half penalty from Karim Ziani to end a run of four consecutive losses.

Injury-free Argentina are in better shape than Nigeria

The teams will face each other in their World Cup Group B opener on Saturday.
According to central defender Martin Demichelis:
“We are having the good fortune that other teams are not,” Demichelis told a news conference at Argentina’s base in the University of Pretoria sports complex. We’ve had no injuries and that gives the coaching staff the confidence to demand the maximum from us. I’m confident that in the remaining days we’ll be able to get there in very good shape.”

Italy to attend the World Cup with 24th man Andrea Cossu

Coach Marcello Lippi has injury and formation headaches to look into. To add to the misery the Azzurri drew 1-1 against Switzerland in their final friendly.

Germany will go into the World Cup in top form despite a string of injuries

Several starting players have been ruled out, including captain Michael Ballack. But two comfortable wins against Hungary and Bosnia in the past days have the Germans in a postive mood with the team playing at times mesmerising football.

Germany take on Australia in their first Group D match on June 13. They then play Serbia and Ghana.

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk will keep Arjen Robben in his World Cup squad

The winger’s hamstring injury proved less serious than first thought following a scan on Sunday. The Dutch FA (KNVB) said in a statement that Robben damaged his left hamstring during the closing minutes of the team’s last warm-up match against Hungary.

A stampede broke out during a pre-World Cup match between Nigeria and North Korea

It left 14 slightly hurt and one policeman in a serious condition. The match was stopped for around five minutes early in the second half because of the injuries and safety of the fans in the overcrowded main stand where the fencing had been removed.

Nigeria won the match 3-1.

The sport’s governing body FIFA said in a statement that they did not have any concerns about a repeat incident occurring during the World Cup, which starts on Friday.

“FIFA would like to reiterate that this friendly match has no relation whatsoever with the operational organisation of the 2010 World Cup, for which we remain fully confident,”

the statement read.

“FIFA had nothing to do with the ticketing of this game.”

Rafa Benitez parted ways with Liverpool on Thursday, after 6 years.

According to the British media Benitez was paid around 3.0 million pounds ($4.42 million) although he had agreed on a five-year contract in March last year. The terms of that deal stated that the Spaniard was entitled to a severance package of approximately 16.0 million pounds, but with Liverpool almost facing debt, the club would have struggled to pay him off in full.

Rafael Benitez ex-Liverpool Manager

A compromise was reached and the 50-year-old can now look ahead at landing a job at Inter Milan, recently vacated by Jose Mourinho.

Liverpool chairman Martin Broughton said in a statement on the club website (www.liverpoolfc.tv):

“Rafa will forever be part of Liverpool folklore after bringing home the Champions League following the epic final in Istanbul but after a disappointing season both parties felt a fresh start would be best for all concerned,”

Benitez added:

“It is very sad for me to announce that I will no longer be manager of Liverpool FC. I would like to thank all of the staff and players for their efforts.”

This parting of ways wasn’t really surprising after they finished seventh in the Premier League this season, their lowest position since 1999.

Rafa had a successful season 2004-05 and after Liverpool finished second to Manchester United in 2008-09 only four points behind, The Reds were expected to put in a tough challenge this season. However, with the departure of Xavi Alonso and a huge string of injuries, the club fell way behind.

Liverpool also failed to advance from the group stages of the Champions League and even missed qualifying for the Champions League next season.
