South American Messi Wins European Player of the Year

Spanish La Liga and Argentine forward Lionel Messi has scooped up the much sought after Ballon d’Or award for the European Player of the Year.

Messi said:

“I’m happy to have won, and on top of it all by a wide majority”

The award is decided by a poll of world football journalists from a shortlist of 30 players.

Messi played a major role to help Barcelona won the treble of Champions League, Domestic League and the Cup last season.

The prize was only open to European footballers until 1995 later the rules were changed to include players from the rest of the world.
