Robert Enke
German football has been rocked by the news of Hannover and former Barcelona goalkeeper- Robert Enke committing suicide early yesterday evening.
Enke was killed after he was hit by a train close to a level crossing near his home in Neustadt-Eilvese and died at the scene. Jörg Neblung, a close friend, confirmed the 32-year-old had killed himself:
“I can confirm that it was suicide, Robert took his own life shortly before six o’clock.”
Enke played in Hannover’s 2-2 draw with Hamburg on Sunday after missing the previous two months with a stomach virus. He was expected to be part of Germany’s 2010 World Cup squad. Germany national team general manager Oliver Bierhoff said:
“We are all shocked, we are lost for words.”
The German FA has cancelled the November 14th friendly with Chile to mourn his death. Enke played eight times for his country and was tipped to keep goal in next year’s World Cup finals in South Africa.
German legend Franz Beckenbauer led the tributes, saying:
“I am infinitely sad. When you receive news like this all other problems pale into insignificance.”
Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack, an international colleague of Enke’s, summed up the mood of the squad.
“I am stunned,” he admitted. “Words fail me.”
A press conference on Wednesday afternoon involving his wife Teresa and the player’s psychologist Dr Valentin Markser confirmed Enke had been battling depression after first being treated for the illness in 2003.
