It has been reported that most of the dead were security officers. At the moment 74 people were confirmed dead while a number of people were injured as well. Witnesses said that some supporters were armed with knives and that the match had a apprehensive atmosphere from the beginning. The post-match scene looked like a war-zone rather than a football match.

According to Reuters – Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov told reporters to stop voting for him after being named Bulgaria’s Footballer of the Year for a seventh time on Monday.

“I prefer to see some of the younger lads winning the award,”

the 29-year-old said after coming top in the poll of sports journalists.

“Please, don’t vote for me anymore.”

Bulgaria’s all-time leading scorer, with 48 goals, quit the Balkan country’s national team in May citing fatigue and family commitments but enjoyed a successful year at United. Last month, he became only the fourth player to score five times in one Premier League match when he helped destroy Blackburn Rovers in a 7-1 win. Berbatov expects to spend the rest of his career at United.

He told reporters:

“I fought to have a chance to play for United and now I can only go down if I leave,” “Why I should do this? It would be better to retire.”

Gaziantepspor striker Ivelin Popov and Twente Enschede goalkeeper Nikolay Mihaylov came second and third in the poll.

Shola Ameobi was the star of the night during the Carling Cup match against Chelsea.

It was an encounter to watch, Ameobi scored the winner in the 90th minute against a 10-man Chelsea.

Newcastle were up on top of the Blues with a 3-1 scoreline but two goals from Nicolas Anelka (69, 86) looked to have taken the tie into extra-time.

Newcastle's winner

Then came Ameobi’s winning header from a Jonas Gutierrez corner in the 90th minute to earn United a deserved place in round four.

Chelsea made a dream start when left-back Van Aanholt crowned his full debut with a goal. The young left-back drilled an angled shot into the corner after being set up superbly by Gael Kakuta.

Chelsea made two changes at half-time with striker Kalou and defender Alex replacing Gael Kakuta and Terry. The night got worse for Chelsea in 53rd minute when Kalou went down with what appeared to be a hamstring injury.

The Ivory Coast striker was taken off on a stretcher and replaced by teenage midfielder Josh McEachran. The youngster was quickly into the game and Tim Krul had to be alert to save his 20-yard shot in the 59th minute.

According to Reuters, the home of Fulham and Northern Ireland soccer player Chris Baird’s mother was attacked with petrol bombs and police said on Monday they were investigating whether the attack had sectarian motives.

The Premier League player’s mother and other family members escaped injury when a device exploded on Sunday against the front window of her home in Rasharkin, Co Antrim.

Attacks by nationalist splinter groups seeking to end British control of Northern Ireland are at their highest level since a 1998 peace agreement largely ended three decades of conflict that cost more than 3,600 lives.

The attacks often spark retaliation by mainly Protestant “loyalist” groups.

Daithi McKay, a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly from the nationalist Sinn Fein party, said Baird’s family was being targeted because of being Catholic.

“The family is not involved in anything political and people are shocked and very angry they have been singled out,” McKay said.

Atlético Madrid’s defense led them to a 1-0 loss against Aris Thessaloniki FC.

The Greek side may have won, but it was a Spanish player who made the difference at the Kleanthis Vikelidis Stadium, Javito’s superb strike just before the hour mark earning Aris the points. It maintains Aris’s proud record of never having lost at home in Europe – a run now up to 22 games – and gives them an early advantage in Group B.

In a tetchy first half punctuated by bookings, neither side looked like breaking the deadlock with the hosts coming closest from the odd set piece. Diego Forlán scored Atlético’s winning goal in the final, but he was rarely involved early on, firing wide from long range in the 23rd minute.

Following the lethargy of the opening period, the tempo could only increase and Ricardo Faty was the first to up the ante, letting fly to get David de Gea scrambling across his goal. Atlético were looking a distinctly more potent proposition too, but in the 59th minute they were behind. Javito gambled on Carlos Ruiz’s flick and, running on to the ball at an angle, the 26-year-old took it on his chest before hitting a searing left-footed shot across De Gea and into the corner.

Ten minutes later and it could have been two as Sergio Koke hit the post following a mistake from De Gea and then Ruiz’s follow-up was blocked. Atlético only began to apply serious pressure late on and substitute Diego passed up their two best chances to grab a point, a stooping head beaten away by Michalis Sifakis before he nodded over 60 seconds later.

Juventus draw with KKS Lech Pozna after Artjoms Rudnevs scored a spectacular hat-trick.

Gieorgio Chiellini scored 2 goals followed by Alessandro Del Piero strike, Inter looked all set to win the encounter. However, Rudnevs’ leveled as the final whistle beckoned.

Juventus started off well. Lech’s Rudnevs opened the scoring after converting a 14th-minute penalty.

Chiellini might have had a hat-trick himself had he reacted in time to another Del Piero set piece. Rudnevs, scored an amazing goal in the second minute of added time to squeeze a point.

In other matches on the day, a hat-trick from Patrick Helmes saw Bayer Leverkusen beat Rosenborg 4-0.

Ante Rukavina and Jorge Sammir got the goals as Dinamo Zagreb claimed an impressive 2-0 win over Villarreal, who had Marcos Senna sent off, while Club Brugge drew 1-1 withPAOK.

Lille continued a largely disappointing week for French teams in Europe, losing 2-1 at home to Sporting Lisbon, with Pierre-Alain Frau’s goal all they could muster after Simon Vukcevic and Helder Postiga had put the visitors 2-0 up.

Levski Sofia twice came from behind to beat Gent 3-2 in the other Group C match.

In Group F, Palermo’s disappointing start to the season continued as they lost 3-2 at Sparta Prague and CSKA Moscow won 3-0 at Lausanne, while AZ Alkmaar took the early advantage in Group E, beating FC Sheriff 2-1 as Dynamo Kiev and BATE Borisov drew 2-2.

In the later kick-offs, Borussia Dortmund wasted a two-goal lead and came back with two goals in the final three minutes for an amazing 4-3 victory at Karpaty Lviv in their Group J opener.

Dortmund went 2-0 up through Nuri Sahin’s penalty and Mario Goetze, but Karpaty levelled through Oleg Golodyuk and Mykhaylo Kopolovets after 52 minutes.

Denys Kozhanov netted in the 78th minute for the Eastern Europeans, but Lucas Barrios and Goetze scored late on to give Dortmund the win.

In the other game in the competition’s toughest group, Paris St Germain enjoyed the ideal start to their campaign after stunning highly-fancied Sevilla at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, with Nene striking the only goal of the game after 14 minutes.

Javier Arizmendi scored at both ends before Pedro Rios secured a 2-1 win for Getafe overOdense in Group H, with Cacau, Christian Gentner and Serdar Tasci netting in Stuttgart’s3-0 win over Young Boys.

Balazs Dzsudzsak levelled in the 89th minute to earn PSV Eindhoven a 1-1 draw againstSampdoria, who had taken the lead through Fabrizio Cacciatore, leaving Metalist Kharkiv to take the early advantage in Group I, courtesy of a 5-0 win at 10-man Debrecen.

In Group L, Fabian Ernst scored in the last minute to give Besiktas a 1-0 win over CSKA Sofia and Porto were 3-0 winners over Rapid Vienna, while AEK Athens and Zenit St Petersburg each claimed 3-1 wins in Group G over Hajduk Split and Anderlechtrespectively, Alexander Kerzhakov bagging a hat-trick for the Russians.

Napoli and FC Utrecht drew 0-0 in Group K.

According to Football365:

Bayern announced they have pressed charges with the Munich I public prosecutor’s office against UEFA’s head of disciplinary services Peter Limacher, and Robin Boksic, who has carried out investigative work for UEFA.

The club say the Stern magazine website reports how the pair have “discredited clubs, associations and individuals involved in professional football, including FC Bayern Munchen, with gross falsehoods and defamatory statements”.

Bayern called on UEFA president Michel Platini to respond and take immediate action over the employment of Limacher and Boksic.

Bayern reported on its website, www.fcbayern.de: “FC Bayern Munchen AG has today pressed charges with the Munchen I public prosecutor’s office against Peter Limacher and Robin Boksic, employees of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA).

“The club has acted as a result of an article published by stern magazine website stern.de in its edition dated Thursday 16 September.

“The article reports that the two individuals concerned have discredited clubs, associations and individuals involved in professional football, including FC Bayern Munchen, with gross falsehoods and defamatory statements.

“The claims uncovered by stern are monstrous and must be severely penalised accordingly.

“FC Bayern Munchen AG will do everything in its power to cause the individuals concerned to answer to the courts, and has initiated the measures outlined above to this end.

“Furthermore, FC Bayern Munchen has called upon UEFA president Michel Platini to clarify his position with regard to these defamatory statements and offer an explanation without delay.

“FC Bayern Munchen further expects immediate action with regard to the continued employment of Peter Limacher and Robin Boksic.”

UEFA responded by writing to Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, saying: “UEFA wishes to reiterate its full confidence in Peter Limacher, who has never accused FC Bayern Munchen of any misconduct, as it is a permanent principle of UEFA to presume innocence in the absence of any proof.

“UEFA will, of course, take any relevant legal action to protect its integrity, as well as the integrity of Mr Limacher.”

Stern’s report contains allegations relating to the 2008 UEFA Cup semi-final between Bayern and Zenit St Petersburg.

UEFA have stressed there is no evidence to substantiate any claims that the tie was in any way fixed.

“UEFA investigates several dozen cases of potentially fixed matches each year, and it double-checks information which comes from a great variety of sources,” said UEFA’s statement.

“However, UEFA presses charges only when strong evidence is provided. The match-fixing cases are extremely sensitive. Consequently, it is extremely important that investigations should not be considered as a sign of culpability.

“In the case of the match between FC Zenit St Petersburg and FC Bayern Munchen, UEFA confirms that, as of today, no evidence of any match-fixing exists and that, therefore, no accusation was, or is being made either by UEFA or by Peter Limacher against FC Bayern Munchen, FC Zenit St Petersburg or any of their representatives.

“UEFA does not associate itself with any declaration in the press, or by any individual, in this matter. With regard to the past contribution of Mr Robin Boksic to certain match-fixing investigations, UEFA will, given the recent public allegations, take all necessary steps to clarify the matter.”

UEFA general secretary Gianni Infantino said: “I am extremely surprised by FC Bayern’s reaction.

“We have never considered them to be guilty of anything, and I am surprised to see them attacking UEFA like this.

“It is sad, and it appears as though they are over-reacting. UEFA and the clubs are on the same side in such a battle, and we should remain united, to be stronger against corruption. Peter Limacher is at the forefront of a very difficult battle, and he has our entire trust.

“The fight against corruption is a priority for the UEFA president Michel Platini, but the fight is a difficult one. This is the reason why Mr Platini called for a European Police from the outset, which would be able to act globally against this disease.”

Mexico took a 12th-minute lead in the friendly through striker Javier Hernandez. Spain substitute David Silva equalized in stoppage-time to steal a draw.

Mexico played better than Spain and deserved their lead. Spain played in their trademark short pass fashion.
Casillas had to make a diving save from midfielder Rafael Marquez before ceding his place to Victor Valdes in the second half.

Spain became the latest world champions not to win their first match after lifting the FIFA trophy. Brazil in 1994 were the last team to win a match immediately after their World Cup success.
